Before you commit

eight quick checks

  • Say it to a friend. Ask them to type what they heard. If it comes back different, simplify it.
  • Type it on a phone keyboard. A handle you fumble to type is a handle people will mistype.
  • Look for look-alike characters. The letter l, the digit 1 and a capital I can read the same. So can O and 0.
  • Read it with no spaces. Make sure it does not spell a word you did not mean.
  • Check it on each platform yourself. Rules and what is taken differ everywhere, so look one platform at a time.
  • Compare it with other names. Choose something clearly your own, not close to another person's name or a business name.
  • Keep a spare. Shortlist two or three, so a handle that is taken does not send you back to the start.
  • Keep it the same where you can. One handle everywhere is easier to remember, find and put in a pitch email.

Quick answers

Can the workshop tell me if a handle is free?

No. Whether a handle can be claimed is decided by each platform and can change at any time. Treat every result as an idea and check it yourself on each platform you want it on.

Why are there no random numbers in the ideas?

Numbers added at random are harder to say and to remember. The ideas use shortening, blends, short words and matching sounds instead. If a number means something to you, type it into your name or keywords.

What does the say-it score measure?

A rough read of how easy a handle is to pronounce: the rhythm of vowels and consonants, long clusters, repeated letters, digits and length. It is a guide for you to test by saying the handle out loud.

Is my shortlist sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Starred handles are kept on this device so they are still there when you return, and Clear removes them.

Which words does the workshop leave out?

Words that could make an account look like it belongs to someone else, such as official or verified, are left out. Pick a handle that is clearly yours.
